How to Choose Between Bwindi’s Gorilla Trekking Sectors

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of Uganda’s main destinations for mountain gorilla trekking. What many first-time visitors do not realize is that Bwindi is divided into different gorilla trekking sectors.

The main sectors are Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Choosing a sector is important because it affects where you stay, how you travel to the park and how your safari itinerary is arranged.

The Four Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sectors

Uganda Wildlife Authority identifies four main gorilla trekking sectors in Bwindi: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Each sector has its own access routes and accommodation options. Your choice should therefore be based on your complete safari plan rather than choosing a sector only because of its name.

Buhoma Sector

Buhoma is located in the northern part of Bwindi and is one of the park’s established tourism areas.

Travelers staying in Buhoma can combine gorilla trekking with other forest activities and community experiences around the area.

Buhoma can also work well for travelers who want to connect their safari with Queen Elizabeth National Park through the western approach.

When choosing Buhoma, check the route from your previous destination and the location of your lodge before confirming your booking.

Ruhija Sector

Ruhija is located on the eastern side of Bwindi.

It can be a useful option for travelers coming through the Kabale and eastern approach to the park. The sector is also associated with forest scenery and birdwatching opportunities.

If you are combining your gorilla trek with Lake Bunyonyi or other destinations in southwestern Uganda, the route and accommodation should be considered when choosing Ruhija.

Rushaga Sector

Rushaga is in the southern part of Bwindi.

The sector is one of the designated gorilla tracking entry points identified by UWA. Travelers staying in this area can arrange their accommodation close to the trailhead.

Rushaga can also be considered when building an itinerary through Kisoro and other southwestern destinations.

Before choosing Rushaga, check the location of your accommodation and the road conditions for the dates of your trip.

Nkuringo Sector

Nkuringo is another southern sector of Bwindi and is located in a mountainous area.

The approach to Nkuringo involves winding roads, so travelers should consider the journey when planning their itinerary.

Some visitors choose to combine the area with destinations around Kisoro and Lake Mutanda or include it as part of a longer southwestern Uganda journey.

Which Sector Should You Choose?

There is no single Bwindi sector that is suitable for every traveler.

Your choice should depend on your travel route, accommodation, arrival point, other destinations and the available gorilla trekking arrangements for your chosen date.

For example, if you are coming from Queen Elizabeth National Park, one route may make more sense than if you are arriving from Lake Bunyonyi or Kisoro.

Does the Sector Change the Gorilla Experience?

The main purpose of choosing a sector is to organize your trek around a designated entry point and the gorilla families managed within that area.

UWA’s permit guidelines explain that visitors book according to the date and designated entry point, while gorilla families are allocated to visitors within the sectors on the day of tracking.

This means you should not choose a sector based on the expectation that one particular sector will guarantee a particular gorilla family or a certain wildlife encounter.

What About Accommodation?

Accommodation is one of the most important things to consider when choosing a sector.

Your lodge should ideally make it practical to reach the relevant meeting point on the morning of your trek.

Can You Change Your Sector?

Sector availability and permit arrangements depend on the booking and UWA procedures in place at the time of travel.
